acrylics 2009,
Finnish assault gun, BT-42 in Viipuri (Vyborg) June 20th 1944.
Following the Soviet summer offensive in the Karelian Isthmus, the defence of the second biggest city of Finland was entrusted to the 20th Ínfantry Brigade. Despite the efforts and due several failures, Viipuri fell.

Here portrayed is the Lieutenant Sippel's gun from the Separate Armoured Company, which was lost in the fighting against better armoured Soviet tanks. The commander himself and the loader were also killed in action.

No niin.

Lieutenant Sippel: hahah, these two branches attached to my tank will totally conceal me against the enemy
Enemy tank: I see you
Lieutenant Sippel: FFFFFFFFFF

I'll always admire Finland for it's fight agains the Soviet Union. You guys proved that even outnumbered and outgunned, one can still obtain victory. Finland has my deepest respect for that and for rally drivers as well :).

Imo coolest assault gun ever, well done!

Niin sillä vähän on, muistan harmitelleeni itsekin. Mies lienee aika tumppi.

BT-42 was constructed from captured Soviet BT-7s fitted with British 4.5-inch howitzers. It was introduced during the trench warfare period in Syväri (Svir-river) 1943 and was used to shoot at Soviet strongpoints etc. However, it was unsuitable for the anti-tank role, unpopular and obsolete in 1944. They were replaced by German StuG's in the Assault Gun Bn, and BT-42s where formed as Separate Armoured Coy.

For this particular individual, Sippel's gun, encountered Soviet T-34's and JS-II's and was unable to pierce their armour. Driver Sgt Virtanen tried to withdraw from the line of fire. He felt the turret shake as something smashed his back and one of the hatches clattered out in the street. He looked behind him and saw that from those in the tower (Lt Sippel and Pte Sorvisto) only their legs remained. T-34 had scored a hit in the turret. The gun also lost its track and was abandoned. The driver was able to escape to friendly lines.
